Living on the Texas Gulf Coast many of us are all too familiar with the fact that Hurricanes are brutally unforgiving forces of nature that can release as much energy as an atom bomb over a very short period of time leaving a path of destruction in their wake. We all remember the devastation caused in recent history on the Texas Gulf Coast by Hurricane caused by Hurricane Ike in September of 2008, and the residual effects of Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005. While there isn’t much that we can do to combat all of the catastrophes associated with these typhoons we can take steps to lessen their impact on our homes. Since most structural damage occurs when the force of the high winds destroys a structures windows and doors one of the simplest tools available to us are Hurricane Proof Replacement Windows, also referred to as Impact Resistant Windows.
What Are Impact Resistant Windows?
Most high impact windows these days use some sort of laminated glass, a material that the automotive industry has been using for quite some time now. Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when impacted with an object. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass.
The strength and other properties of laminated glass can be tailored to meet specific needs. Also, depending on the location, size of the panels, and design pressures, the interlayer used in the laminate can be of different thicknesses or types.
Our impact resistant windows offer a home defense when it comes to protecting the things that are most valuable to you. Impact resistant windows enhance the security of your home at those crucial times while also increasing it’s market value. While there are many hurricane rated windows on the market, Renaissance Windows & Doors stands behind the quality, construction and installation of the products we sell.
- Our impact resistant windows have advanced to the point where they are thoroughly tested to withstand Category 5 wind conditions and the debris that goes with it. What that means is that your home has a much better chance of remaining intact with minimal damage.
- If one of your windows falls victim to a chunk of wood flying through it, the air pressure in your home will expand rapidly (much like a balloon) and something will give way. It could be your roof, another window, a door, or even a wall. Once that happens, your home is extremely vulnerable and will quickly deteriorate with each passing minute.
- Renaissance Impact Resistant/Hurricane Proof Windows have successfully passed a launch missile impact test. A 9-pound 2×4 wood stud is launched at 50 feet per second (fps), or almost 35 miles per hour, at the center of the window. If the window doesn’t shatter, another board is then shot at one of the corners of the window. Both the center and the corner of the window must be able to hold together to pass this test.
- After passing the launch missile impact test, our windows are then subjected to pressures that simulate winds of up to 200 miles per hour. If the window remains intact within the frame, it can be certified as an impact resistant window.
