With outdoor living becoming more important to homeowners over the last few years, having good quality patio doors is imperative. Being able to easily move from the interior of the home to the deck or back yard means getting to the “outdoor room” in the home is an easy and convenient process.
New models of patio doors not only look attractive, but they are also more energy efficient than previous versions. They are also designed to be more leak-resistant and secure than older models.
New Patio Doors: Different Styles Available
Swinging Patio Doors: These hinged patio doors work in a similar manner to standard exterior doors. Often hung in pairs, this style of patio door is made of full view glass panels. They are center hung, and hinged on either side of a central mullion so that they open like butterfly wings.
Homeowners can also choose a hinged French door style. This type of patio door is hinged at the side jambs so that the doors meet when they are closed. The latching mechanism is located in an astragal, which is mounted to one of the doors. When French doors are opened, the area between the hinges is clear.
Sliding Patio Doors: Whether they are called sliding, gliding or bypass doors, this is a very popular style of patio door. They have two or more panels, and at least one slides back and forth on hidden rollers. The panels can be combined with fixed panels to create a large expanse of glass. The panels slide parallel to the wall so they don’t interfere with placement of furniture or walking areas, either inside or outside the home.
